Part Seventeen

The explosion had been violent but directed almost straight up and thus only a few large droplets had landed on or near Marie. The instant they hit her the leather in her coat started smoking and she struggled to get out of it. It took a bit longer than usual as she was still dizzy from the shock-wave and she felt the strange coldness creeping closer to her skin. Then there where finger helping her and the solid presence of Sarah at her side.

They got the cloak off and threw it on the ground. The remains smoldered silently on the ground and Marie watched mournfully.

"I really liked that coat. It fit just right..."

"Don't worry boss, we'll you a new one. I bet Argyle has a new prototype for you to try out..."

"But..."

"We really should move. This wasn't a silent event and The Watchers are bound to come looking soon..."

Marie sighed. "You're right. Let's move." She'd saved what she could from the pockets of the coat and now she took a branch and shoved it into one of the smoking piles that where all that remained of the Sniffer. The leather dissolved and as the final wisps of smoke faded and the Handler's thin body swayed in the wind the two women walked out from the vacant lot and into the back streets of Chrysopoeia again.
